Acoustic spectrum analyser generating spectrograms for audio files on Windows, macOS, and Debian-based Linux

Summary

Spek is an acoustic spectrum analyser application that generates spectrograms from audio files. It supports multiple platforms including Windows, macOS, and Debian-based Linux distributions.

Features

  • Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based spectrum analysis using the FFTW library for performance improvements.
  • Support for a wide range of audio formats via FFmpeg integration.
  • Adjustable color palettes and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) window sizes and functions.
  • Ability to switch between different audio streams and channels within the same file.
  • Support for High DPI displays on supported platforms.
  • Standalone application with installers available for Windows (64-bit only) and macOS (Catalina or newer, Intel and ARM Macs).
  • Open source development hosted on GitHub, with active maintenance and regular updates.

Development and Platform Support

Spek was rewritten moving from GTK+ to wxWidgets to improve cross-platform integration and packaging. It is included in Debian testing and forthcoming stable releases, making it easily accessible on Debian and derivative distributions like Ubuntu and Mint. Beta installers are available for Windows and macOS.

For Whom is Spek Suitable

Spek is useful for audio engineers, archivists, and anyone interested in analyzing the spectral content of audio files to verify quality, detect lossy compression, or simply visualize frequency components.
