A polyphonic modular software synthesizer combining digital phase distortion oscillators and analogue-style filters with extensive modulation options

Summary

Bazille is a large polyphonic modular synthesizer by u-he, combining digital oscillators based on phase distortion and FM synthesis with analogue-style filters and flexible modular patching. It targets users seeking deep modular synthesis with extensive modulation and signal routing options.

Features

  • Modular, stereo synthesizer with up to 16 voices polyphony
  • Four digital oscillators using phase distortion (PD), frequency modulation (FM), and fractal resonance (FR)
  • Four self-oscillating multimode analogue-style filters, each with up to six parallel outputs and modes including lowpass, bandpass, and highpass
  • Four ADSR envelopes with additional fall/rise controls for sustain stage and modulateable overall rate
  • Two LFOs with three parallel outputs per LFO and unipolar option
  • 16-step morphing sequence per voice with multiple snapshots and outputs
  • Two mapping generators (up to 128 steps) with drawing tools to shape modulation sources or use as oscillator waveforms
  • Four multiplex modules serving multiple roles like mixing, crossfading, ring and amplitude modulation
  • Signal processors including inverter, rectifier, sample & hold, lag generators, and quantizer
  • Four built-in effects: stereo delay, six types of distortion, two types of phaser, and spring reverb
  • Resizable user interface, MIDI learn, microtuning and global preferences
  • Supports MPE and Oddsound MTS-ESP hardware integration
  • Comes with over 1700 factory presets

Background and Design

Bazille is the second product from u-he's Berlin Modular project, inspired by classic analogue and digital modular synthesizers, especially the Roland System 100M from the 1980s. It attempts to combine the flexibility and tactile experience of modular patching with the advantages of software synths, such as saving presets, polyphony, and multiple instances.

The oscillators integrate classic digital synthesis technologies from the 1980s, allowing a wide sonic palette from traditional FM sounds to unique fractal resonance effects. The system emphasizes exhaustive modulation and routing, making it suitable for synthesis enthusiasts and sound designers.

Platform and Delivery

Bazille is available as a plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux (Linux versions currently in beta). It is delivered as a plugin requiring a host/DAW and is not a standalone software.
