Summary
Type A is a plugin inspired by the Dolby A noise reduction encode stage, used as a vintage enhancer that dynamically increases the high-frequency content of audio signals naturally without adding artifacts or distortion.
Functionality
- Emulates only the encode stage of the Dolby A noise reduction system.
- Splits input signal into 4 frequency bands with overlapping top bands and applies dynamic compression inversely proportional to each band's volume.
- Adds brightness and air dynamically to quieter sounds without altering louder ones, simulating a natural dynamic equalizer.
- Includes adjustable controls for volume per band, compressor attack and release, noise volume, VU-meter source selection, and brightness and contrast graphics controls.
- Features oversampling up to 16x, presetable system with randomizer, resizable window and a vintage multi-band compressor model.
- License activation supports online and offline modes without dongles or internet connection after activation.
Platforms and Formats
Available for macOS, Windows, and Linux desktop platforms and also as an iOS/iPadOS app.
- Supported plugin formats include VST2, VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP.
- Standalone versions available for iOS/iPadOS.
Background and Usage
The original Dolby A system was designed as a noise reducer for tape recordings; engineers have historically used the encode stage alone as an enhancer (known as the Dolby A Trick) to add presence and air to audio tracks, especially vocals, without added distortion. Type A recreates this effect professionally as a plugin.
